We are pleased to announce the issuance of a limited edition casting of Bernard Dreyfuss’s 1885 bust of General Grant in uniform. Sometimes called a mourning bust as it appeared shortly after Grant’s death on July 23, 1885, this striking bust has long been sought after by collectors and others interested in our eighteenth president. The Dreyfuss likeness is considered by many to be the finest likeness of General Grant at the height of his fame. Examples in fine condition are quite scarce and usually command in the $750 to $1000 range.
This is the first casting to be done since the bust was first issued, as far as we can determine. It is based on a superb original owned by Main Street Fine Books and will be strictly limited to 75 individually numbered hand-produced copies, after which the master cast will be destroyed. Each bust is solid cast of a fiber-reinforced plaster material bearing a durable antiqued bronze finish. Meticulous care has been taken to assure that every detail of the original bust, from the four stars on the general’s epaulettes to the buttons on his vest, has been faithfully captured. In addition to reproducing the octagonal cast base of the original, each bust is permanently affixed to a solid walnut octagonal base, adding further beauty and stability. The height of each bust is 18½", the diameter of the walnut base 9½", the total weight a hefty 22 pounds.
Orders are now being taken for this outstanding likeness.
