Preprinted reply card for a Civil War Round Table of New York meeting. Mann checks the "will not attend" line and signs boldly in black fountain pen, adding below: "Wish I could be there. Will be in Hollywood directing 'The Day Lincoln Was Shot' -- CBS. Feb. 11th." This made-for-tv film aired on the "Ford Star Jubilee" series, and starred Raymond Massey as Abraham Lincoln, Lillian Gish as Mary Lincoln, Jack Lemmon as John Wilkes Booth, narrated by Charles Laughton. Interesting and unusual.

5. MANN, Delbert (1920-2007).
Typed Letter Signed.
This American film and television director was only the third director to win both an Academy Award and a Cannes Palme d'Or for the same film ("Marty," 1955); other films include "Desire Under the Elms" (1958), "The Dark at the Top of the Stairs" (1960), "A Gathering of Eagles" (1963) and "David Copperfield" (1969). TLS, 1p, 8½" X 11", Los Angeles, CA, 1978 November 3. Addressed to noted Lincoln/Civil War scholar ARNOLD F. GATES (1914-93). Near fine. On "Richmond-Confederate Productions, Inc." letterhead, Mann chats with this friend from his days in New York in the 1950s. "I was involved in doing a television film during the early part of the summer," he writes, "and then was off to Ireland where I spent the last two months preparing a film which, unfortunately, has collapsed because of a failure in the financing plans. So now I am back here, not knowing for sure what I will be doing next, but left free to try to catch up on my old correspondence! Maybe sometime we will be able to get the [Robert E.] Lee project off the ground. Money has been promised from various sources, but as yet hasn't materialized. I have learned to count on nothing in this crazy business, so it may happen with surprising suddenness, or it may not happen at all...." Signed simply "Del" in green marker. Mann directed a number of made-for-television movies around this time, making it difficult to determine exactly which film he was filming "during the early part of the summer." And it seems this film involving General Lee never came to pass, for nothing resembling this appears in the Mann filmography. An interesting letter.
Price: $75.00
6. MANSFIELD, Jayne (1932-67) and HARGITAY, Mickey (1926-2006).
Inscribed Photographs Signed.
The "poor man's Marilyn Monroe" is remembered for breathless, ditzy roles in films of the late '50s and early '60s such as "Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?" (1957); she was decapitated in an auto accident. Hargitay was a Hungarian-born bodybuilder who won the "Mr. Universe" title in 1956; as one of Mae West's musclemen in her stage show, he came to the attention of starlet Jayne Mansfield; once wed, they appeared together in films such as "The Loves of Hercules" (1960) and "Promises! Promises!" (1963), and he appeared in other B movies such as "Primitive Love" (1964), the Italian kitsch classic "Bloody Pit of Horror" (1965), "Spree" (1967), "Wild Wild World of Jayne Mansfield" (1968), "Lady Frankenstein" (1971), "The Reincarnation of Isabel" (1972) and "Delirium" (1972). Choice pair (of photographs, that is): Hers is an IPS, 8" X 10", n.p., 1961 August 28. Very good. Faint yellowish tape stain at each corner. Scene from "Kiss Them for Me" (1957) showing Mansfield full-length in profile standing in a shipyard, holding up a poodle cheek to cheek. She inscribes it hugely and flamboyantly "To Donald M. Burnell -- / Affectionately, / Jayne / Mansfield / 8/28/61." (The dots on both "i" letters and even the period are drawn as hearts, of course.) His is likewise an IPS, 8" X 10", n.p., 1961 August. Very good. Faint yellowish tape stain at each corner. Full-length flexing "muscle shot" in a teeny swimsuit, inscribed large and bold in thick fountain pen "To Don / Burnell / Sincerely / Mickey Hargitay / Aug. 1961." A superb and scarce duo, signed to the same admirer on the same day.
Price: $725.00
7. MANSFIELD, Jayne (1932-67).
Inscribed Photograph Signed.
The "poor man's Marilyn Monroe" is remembered for breathless, ditzy roles in films of the late '50s and early '60s such as "Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter?" (1957); she was decapitated in an auto accident. IPS, 8" X 10", n.p., 1961 August 28. Very good. Faint yellowish tape stain at each corner. Teasing head-and-shoulders shot of "America's Smartest Dumb Blonde" almost wearing a strapless, low-cut number. Near the bottom, she inscribes it quite large and flamboyant "To Don -- / Love & Kisses! / Jayne Mansfield / 8/28/61." (The dots on both "i" letters and even the dot on the exclamation point are drawn as hearts, of course.) Very charming and extremely scarce.
Price: $550.00

Signature / Unsigned Photograph.

Not gummed on verso and never affixed. Accompanied by a nice 8" X 10" black and white photograph, a charming half-length portrait of a smiling Marceau in character as "Bip."
Price: $55.00

10. MARINOFF, Fania (1890-1971).
Inscribed Photograph Signed.
This Russian-American actress played lead and supporting roles in many Broadway plays (1903-37) and starred in eight silent films (1914-17); in 1914 she married the homosexual writer and photographer Carl Van Vechten (1880-1964), a union that lasted until his death. IPS, 8" X 10", n.p., 1947. Near fine. A superb closeup image taken by Van Vechten on January 9, 1939 -- when he returned to photography after a lengthy hiatus of writing, she was among his first subjects. Here she appears almost in profile, hair wrapped in a silky turban of some sort, wearing a decorative blouse and with a fabric backdrop that both suggest her native Ukrainia. In a light area at the upper left, she inscribes it boldly in a purple ink "For Edward / Darnell / the 7th and / the best / My best wishes / always / Fania Marinoff / 1947." This image does not bear the Van Vechten blind-embossed stamp at the lower corner, as do some. Carl Van Vechten had befriended, through correspondence, a young American G.I. named Edward Darnell, and a series of visits between Darnell and Van Vechten took place. Whenever Van Vechten inscribed copies of his books to Darnell, he indicated "the 7th" -- he once explained that he had so many friends named Edward that this was the only way he could keep them straight! Darnell also befriended Marinoff and other friends of the couple. A choice and very scarce large original Van Vechten print with nice associations.
Price: $1,500.00

Accompanied by a superb, scarce 4¼" X 6½" cabinet photograph (front- and backstamped Ye Rose Studio, Providence, RI) depicting Marlowe full-length in military costume for "Colinetta" in 1899. Very good. Minor soiling. A lovely duo.

Autograph Letter Signed.

Autograph Letter Signed ("Harpo"), 1p, 7¼" X 10½", Cathedral City, CA, n.y. [probably summer 1961]. Addressed to Don (Woolf). Near fine. In this rare example of a Harpo ALS, written on "El Rancho Harpo" letterhead, Harpo writes to an executive with a greeting card publisher, California Artists, which published a series of Christmas cards featuring artwork by movie stars. "Here is my Xmas painting," he writes. "Hope it is not too late for your market. If you use it I would like to send them out as my own personal cards also." Harpo had long been interested in civil rights and the African-American cause, so the closing of this letter is quite appropo: "Would like to stick to my original choice of N.A.A.C.P. to receive royalties, if any." Full letters in Harpo's hand are quite scarce, and one with choice, unusual content such as this doubly so. Accompanied by a modern matte finish printed 8" X 10" photograph depicting the four Marx Brothers at the height of their fame.
