Signature and Inscription.
When popular English actress Vining married popular American actor Edward L. Davenport (1815-77) in 1849, the result was hugely popular actress Fanny Davenport (1850-98), who toured America with her parents. Bold, attractive "Dec 25th/76 / To / Mr. [Greenhouse?] / With kind regards / of Mrs EL Davenport / Merry Xmas & happy New Year" on a 4½" X 3¼" slip, n.p. Very good. Mounting traces on verso. Quite handsome example.

Although he appeared in "Sunset Boulevard" and other films, it is as the star and director of television's "Dragnet" that this actor is remembered. IPS, 8" X 10", n.p., n.d. [ca. 1960]. Near fine. Slight tape stain at each corner. Handsome, very typical head-and-shoulders portrait in suit and tie, showing the barest hint of a smile -- classic Webb. Inscribed huge and bold in black fountain pen in a light area at the lower left "to / Don / Best Wishes / Jack Webb." Extremely pleasing and rather scarce.

Although he appeared in "Sunset Boulevard" and other films, it is as the star and director of television's "Dragnet" that this actor is remembered. Uncommon TNS, 1p, 7½" X 10", North Hollywood, CA, 1961 July 11. Addressed to Don Woolf of California Artists. Near fine. On Mark VII Ltd. letterhead, Webb writes to a firm that produced Christmas cards featuring original art work by film stars: "You have no idea how flattered I was to be considered by your organization as a contributor to your Christmas Card project. However, I haven't done any painting in several years and I don't have anything suitable at this time...." A bold, handsome signature. Rather scarce. Comes with a glossy black and white 8" X 10" photograph showing Webb half-length, seat at a desk, in "The Original Dragnet."

19. WHITE, Alice (1907-?).
Signed Christmas Card.
This silent film star of the '20s survived the transition to talkies. Signature on inside message panel of Christmas card, heavy stock 4½" X 5½", n.p., n.d. Very good. Beneath a printed Christmas greeting, White adds, "fondly -- / Alice White." Her pen appears to have been faint, so she signs over it a second time, boldly. On the verso is a chatty ANS (signed simply "A"): "Do hope all is well with you & that you're already to start a big New Year -- boy! Time sure do go fast -- wow!...." Interesting.

21. WILDE, Cornel (1915-89).
Signature / Unsigned Photograph.
This leading man reached the height of his popularity in the 1940s, in films such as "A Song to Remember" (for which he was nominated for best actor Oscar) and "The Bandit of Sherwood Forest"; later he produced and directed films, some of which he also acted in ("The Naked Prey"). Large bold signature in black fountain pen, 3 3/4" X 1½", n.p., n.y. [1962]. Near fine. Wilde's pen skipped initially with the capital "C," which he then wrote over boldly. A super example, particularly choice as it was penned for a greeting card company (California Artists) for reproduction on a planned Christmas card featuring one of Wilde's oil paintings. Accompanied by a circa 1962 5" X 7" black-and-white head-and-shoulders portrait of a broody young Wilde.

This leading man reached the height of his popularity in the 1940s in films such as "A Song to Remember" (for which he was nominated for best actor Oscar) and "The Bandit of Sherwood Forest"; later he produced and directed films, among them "The Naked Prey," in which he also starred. TLS ("Cornel"), 2pp, 8" X 10", "Emblem Productions Limited" letterhead, Iver Heath, Britain, 1962 November 2. Addressed to Don Woolf of California Artists. Very good. Writing to a company that produced Christmas cards featuring original art work by film stars, a perturbed Wilde discusses in detail how cards featuring his paintings might be shipped to him in England in time to be mailed out for Christmas. Interesting and odd. Also notes: "All has gone very well with our film, and I think we will have something really quite terrific...."

25. WILSON, Francis (1854-1935).
Signature.
One of the most famous actors and hoofers of his day, often remembered for the play "The Bachelor's Baby," which he both wrote and starred in; noted president of the Actors' Equity Association (1913-21), which won a famous strike in 1919 under his direction; authored the highly-regarded "The Eugene Field I Knew" (1898), a memoir of his poet friend. Large bold signature and "1919" in dark brown fountain pen, heavy stock 5½" X 3½" card, n.p. Near fine. Superb example signed during this most eventful year of his life.
