1. ABERNATHY, Ted (1933-2004). Signature.
"With the unique underhand motion," states the 1971 Kansas City Royals yearbook, "Abernathy's curveball rises and his fastball sinks. He's almost impossible to hit when you only get one shot at him. You see the overhand stuff all the time, then this guy comes in there throwing the ball from out of the ground." He debuted in 1955 with the Washington Senators and retired in 1972. 2. ADAMS, Ace (1910-96). Signature.
"The fastball and change, I threw them all, used everything. Fastball, curve, slow curve, that's the way I pitched. And then when I got to the big leagues I started practicing up on a slider, and there weren't many sliders in those days." - Ace Adams. This pitcher debuted with the New York Giants in 1941, retiring in 1946. Bold signature in blue ballpoint plus "New York Giants / 1941-1946," heavy stock 5" X 3" card, n.p., 1974 August 21. Fine. 3. ADAMS, Earl "Sparky" (1894-1989). Signature.
This shortstop debuted in 1922 with the Chicago Cubs (until 1927), ans also played for the Pittsburgh Pirates (1928-29), St. Louis Cardinals (1930-33, including the 1931 World Series team) and Cincinnati Reds (1933-34). Large full signature in blue ballpoint, heavy stock 5" X 3" card, n.p., n.y. Near fine. Quite nice example.

4. AINSMITH, Eddie (1890-1981). Signature.
Early (debuted 1910) catcher with the Washington Senators, Detroit Tigers and others, retiring in 1924. Old-age signature dated 1974 February 22 on a special heavy stock 5" X 3" card. Fine. With original envelope.

5. ALBRIGHT, J. Harold "Jack" (1921-91). Signature.
World War Two interrupted this shortstop's debut with the Boston Red Sox; in 1947, he officially debuted with the Philadelphia Phillies. Signature in blue fineline, heavy stock 5" X 3" card, n.p., n.y. Near fine. Undated, but a nice later life example.

6. ALDRICH, Charles C. "Ki" (1916-83). Signature and Inscription.
Texas Christian University star center (1936-38), a 1938 All-American who captained that team to a national championship; played for the Chicago Cardinals (1939-40) and the Washington Redskins (1941-42, 1945-47); elected in 1960 to the College Football Hall of Fame. Bold "Kevin: / May God bless you. / Yours truly, / Ki Aldrich" in blue ballpoint on a heavy stock 5" X 3" card, n.p., n.y. Near fine. A handsome example.

8. ALSTON, Walter (1911-84). Inscribed Photograph Signed.
This Baseball Hall of Famer (elected 1983) managed the Brooklyn (later Los Angeles) Dodgers from 1954 to 1976, bringing them four world championships. IPS, 5" X 7", n.p., n.d. [ca. 1960]. Good plus. Yellowed tape stain at each corner and bit of general wear. Informal matte finish head-and-shoulders smiling pose of Alston in his Brooklyn uniform, inscribed large and bold in blue ballpoint "Best wishes Donald / from Walt Alston." Fairly attractive despite flaw -- and definitely rather uncommon.

9. ALSTON, Walter (1911-84). Signature and Inscription.
This Baseball Hall of Famer (elected 1983) managed the Brooklyn (later Los Angeles) Dodgers from 1954 to 1976, bringing them four world championships. "Best wishes Donald / from / Walt Alston" large and bold in blue ballpoint, irregular 4½" X 2" slip, n.p., n.y. [ca. 1960]. Very good. Several tape stains at corners end edges, not affecting signature but touching couple letters of inscription. Despite flaw, rather attractive.

10. AMBERS, Lou (1913-95). Signature.
World lightweight champion in 1939, inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame in 1964. Bold signature, heavy stock 5" X 3" card, n.p., 1985 April 22. Fine. With original envelope.

11. ANDERSON, Alfred "Alf" (1914-85). Signature.
World War Two interrupted the career of this shortstop, who debuted with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1941 and retired there in 1946. Bold signature in blue ballpoint (below which he pens "Pittsburgh / 41, 42, 46,"), heavy stock 5" X 3" card, n.p., n.y. Near fine. Undated, but a choice later life example.

12. ANDERSON, Andrew "Andy" (?-?). Signature.
This Negro Leagues player (1916-36) was a teammate of Satchel Paige on the 1927 Chattanooga Black Lookouts; he also played for the Mohawk Giants and the Syracuse Black Chiefs. Large bold "Andrew Andy Anderson" in blue fineline, heavy stock 5" X 3" card, n.p., 1987 March 16. Near fine. Anderson started to sign the verso as well before realizing he'd already signed the card, thus the "Andrew Andy A" found there.

13. ANKENMAN, Fred N. "Pat," Jr. (1912-89). Signature.
This shortstop debuted with the St. Louis Cardinals in 1936, and also played for the Brooklyn Dodgers (1943-44). Full signature in black ballpoint in his small neat hand, heavy stock 5" X 3" card, n.p., n.y. [ca. 1970]. Near fine. Attractive example.

14. APPLING, Lucius B. "Luke" (1907-91). Signature.
Baseball Hall of Famer (elected 1964). Large bold signature on 6" X 4" card, n.p., n.d., accompanied by 8½" X 11" color photocopy of Appling's Donruss "Hall of Fame Heroes" baseball card. Fine.

15. ARAGON, Art (1927-2008). Signature.
Debuting in 1944, this American lightweight boxer retired in 1960 with a career record of 90 wins, 20 losses and six draws. Bold signature (below which he adds his nickname, "Golden Boy") in black ballpoint, heavy stock 5" X 3" card, n.p., 1985 January 30. Near fine. With original envelope.

16. ARIZIN, Paul (1928-2006). Signature.
Known as "Pitchin' Paul," this basketball star played with the Philadelphia Warriors (1950-51, 1954-62), leading that team to its 1956 NBA championship and leading the league in scoring in 1952 and '57; a pioneer of the jump shot, he was chosen one of the 50 greatest NBA players ever; inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 1977. Signature and "Phila Warriors" in blue ballpoint in Arizin's small and cramped hand, heavy stock 5" X 3" card, n.p., 1974 May 23. Fine. With original envelope.

17. ASHBURN, Rich "Whitey" (1927-97). Photograph Signed.
Center fielder with the Philadelphia Phillies (1948-1959), Chicago Cubs (1960-1961) and New York Mets (1962), famed for twice capturing the National League batting title (1955, 1958); elected to the Hall of Fame in 1995. PS, 8" X 10", n.p., n.d. Very good. Yellowed tape stain at each corner and one (each 1") along each side. Handsome matte finish head-and-shoulders portrait of Ashburn in his Cubs uniform during his last season, boldly signed in blue ballpoint across his chest.

18. ASHE, Arthur, Jr. (1943-93). Signature.
This AIDS victim was the first black tennis player to win the men's singles at Wimbledon in 1975; in 1985 he was elected to the Tennis Hall of Fame. Bold signature in blue fineline, heavy stock 5" X 3" card, n.p., n.y. Near fine. With 1993 "People" magazine front cover featuring a portrait of Ashe.

19. ASHLEY, John (1930-2008). Signature.
This long-time National Hockey League referee began in 1959, and officiated at every game seven in the Stanley Cup playoffs between 1964 and 1972; in 1981 he was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame. Large bold signature in black fineline, heavy stock 5" X 3" card, n.p., 1988 November 24. Fine. With original envelope, partly addressed in Ashley's hand.

20. AULT, Doug (1950-2004). Signature.
The year after his debut, this Toronto Blue Jay hit the first and second home runs in that teams first game. Handsome signature, heavy stock 5" X 3" card, n.p., 1977 May 1. Near fine. With original envelope. Choice -- signed less than one month after that memorable April 7th game against the Chicago White Sox.

21. AVERILL, Earl (1902-83). Photograph Signed.
The "Earl of Snohomish," this Hall of Fame outfielder had a .318 career batting average, and twice hit more than 200 homeruns in a single season. PS, 3½" X 5½", n.p., n.d. Fine. Gold Hall of Fame plaque postcard, signed at the top margin.

22. BABICH, John C. (1913-2001). Signature.
This pitcher debuted with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1934, retiring from the Philadelphia Athletics in 1941. Bold signature in black fineline, heavy stock 5" X 3" card, n.p., n.y. Very good. Minor age toning.

Heavyweight boxing champion and father of actor Max "Jethro" Baer Jr. Uncommon IPS, heavy stock 4½" X 6" archivally tipped to larger acid-free matte board, n.p., 1959. Very good. Printed promotional photograph, a handsome suit-and-tie closeup portrait. Boldly inscribed shortly before his death "To / Rollie / my old pal -- / your friend -- / Max Baer / 1959." Fairly scarce.

24. BAKER, Gene (1925-99). Signature.
Together with Ernie Banks, this infielder broke the Chicago Cubs color barrier in 1953; from 1957 to 1961 he played with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Bold signature in black ballpoint, heavy stock 5" X 3" card, n.p., 1974 May 13. Fine. With original envelope, signed again and partly addressed by Baker.

25. BALTER, Sam (1909-98). Signature.
A member of the first U.S. Olympic basketball team in 1936 in Berlin -- and the only Jewish-American to win gold at that noted Hitler-dominated event; later a noted West coast sportscaster and "Voice of the UCLA Bruins"; elected in 1994 to the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. Bold signature and "'36 Olympics, Berlin / Gold Medal Winner, Basbetball, USA" in blue ballpoint, heavy stock 5" X 3" card, n.p., 1984 June 15. Fine. With original envelope.

29. BARRETT, Charles "Red" (1915-90). Signature.
This pitcher debuted with the Cincinnati Reds, where he played until 1940 until joining the Boston Braves (1943-44, 1946-49) and the St. Louis Cardinals (1945-46); on August 10, 1944 he pitched the shortest night game in baseball history (58 pitches, 1 hour 15 minutes); in 1945 his earned run average was 3.00 and he was named to the AP National League All-Star team; and in 1948 he played in two World Series games. Full signature in blue ballpoint near the bottom of a heavy stock 5" X 3" card, n.p., n.y. [ca. 1970]. Near fine.
