1. ( WORLD WAR TWO -- Maps). Collection of 7 News Agency Glossy Photographs Showing Maps of World War Two Italy. Group of seven (7) original black-and-white glossy news agency photographs (International News Photos, Chicago), most in very good to near fine condition and all with the usually-absent original mimeographed text sheets still present (though age toned, as printed on cheap newsprint stock). Five of the photos are 6.5" X 8.5" in size and two are 8" X 10". Large "International News Photos" and use data inkstamped on verso of each. All depict portions of Italy, with arrows and shading indicating troop positions, etc. In chronological order, caption sheets describe each as follows: 1.) 9-23-34: "Possible Invasions Points. This map shows how Hitler's Europe may be invaded from three points. Shaded arrows indicate how new attempts could be made from Corsica, Sardinia, and Bari. Dotted lines denote air miles to Nazi targets...." 2.) 10-13-43: "Daily War Map -- Italy. The shaded portion in the center of the map shows present Allied position. With the American capture of La Ricca in the center of the line, the flanking movement against Nazis behind the Volturno proceeds...." 3.) 10-13-43: Variation of the preceding -- "Today's War Map on Italy. The shaded portion on this map depicts the Allied position in central Italy. With the capture of La Ricca, in the center of the line, by the American Fifth Army the flanking movement of the Nazi position entrenched behind the Volturno River, is shown...." 4.) 10-15-43: "Nazi Lines Totter. The Nazi defense line on the Volturno tottered as the Allies pushed forward at the mouth of the river and at Capua. At Vinchiaturo and Campbasso, the British Fifth Army was outflanking the Nazis...." 5.) 10-19-43: "Daily War Map -- Italy. Allied positions in Italy are shown by the shaded portion of the map. Arrows indicate points where Allies are applying pressure, on the front extending from Cancelio on the north of the Volturno River through Capia section and on to Cerrato, Vinchiaturo, Casacalenda to four miles west of Termoli...." 6.) 10-19-43: Variation of the preceding -- "Allied Forces Extend Their Front in Italy. The shaded area shows the Allied positions in Italy. The arrows show the points where the Allies are putting on pressure. The front now extends from Cancello on the north of the Volturno through Capia section through Cerrato, Vinchiaturo, Casacelenda and four miles west of Termoli...." 7.) 10-20-43: "All Roads Beginning to Lead to Rome. The American Fifth and the British Eighth Armies are driving towards the German defense line on the Garigliano River. The Americans are at one point only about 85 miles from Rome...." These high-quality prints would of course have been sent to various large metropolitan newspapers for possible reproduction. The vast majority of these prints have been destroyed over the years as newspaper photograph archives became obsolete, making surviving originals in superb condition quite scarce, especially with the fragile text pages present. This particular group chronicles a specific and intense period in the war, and makes an interesting study of the means in which war news, sensitive and censored, was disseminated to the public.

Wylie Crawford and the Gettysburg Battlefield Memorial Association. [Gettysburg]: The Gettysburg Battlefield Memorial Association, 1888. Folio (13¼" X 18"). Very good. Original, as-issued folds; some separations along folds neatly and archivally mended on verso; couple of old non-archival tape repairs (on verso) have left pale show-through stains, not terribly dark or offensive; mild bit of edgewear. Overall quite attractive and easily handleable partly-colored map, a fine and oft-reprinted military map of the region, showing numerous troop locations, etc., in blue and pink. Inset closeup map at upper right shows "Site of Gen. Gregg's CAVALRY Operations." Lithographed by Burke & McFetridge of Philadelphia, this thorough map clearly delineates the position of Kilpatrick's Union Cavalry, Neill's Brigade 6th Corps, Wadsworth's Div. 1st Corps, Doubleday's Div. 1st Corps, Buford's Cavalry 1st Corps, Robinson's Div. 1st Corps, etc. Contemporary blue inkstamp at lower left on verso notes this was purchased at Warner's Notion & Variety Store in Gettysburg -- this being published no doubt in preparation for the 25th anniversary of the battle, there would have been a brisk demand at the time for a detailed map for the growing tourist trade. Very uncommon, especially in decent condition.

25. (NEW YORK -- Map). REBELE, Otto (artist). Guide to the Walter Whitehead Dinner given by The Art Directors Club of New York at Janssen's Hofbrau Broadway and 30th Street, New York.... [New York]: Advertising Agencies' Service Co., n.y. [ca. 1950s]. Folio (13½" X 17", folds down to 3¼" X 8½"), housed in 8vo stiff green pictorial folder (cover title: "Map of New York"). Map very good, folder near fine. 1" edge tear near the center of the top edge, along one of the fold lines (neatly, archivally closed on verso); original, as-issued folds present but otherwise not weakened. This delightful, cartoonish map is printed in black on a thin, translucent onion-skin paper, and depicts a small area of Manhattan. Cartouche (in shape of a hip flask!) at lower right bears title cited above (along with "April 30th 7 P.M. / Make your reservations now / no tickets sold at the door"). Within this roughly-rectangular shaped decorative border runs the following (one line to each side): "FOR ITS ALWAYS FAIR WEATHER / WHEN GOOD FELLOWS GET TOGETHER / WITH A STEIN ON THE TABLE / AND A GOOD SONG RINGING CLEAR." Above this border, along the top edge, runs the caption in mock Colonial style: "Plates Respektfully & Mechanickally ENGRAV'D by Ye HAGOPIAN PHOTO ENGRAVING CO., Inc., Artisans of Greate SKILL, Expressly for Ye Occasion, and for ye PLEASURE of Master WHITEHEAD in Especiall." Below this border, along the bottom edge, runs another mock Colonial caption: "Printed & Bound with CARE by Ye Craftsmen yclept: Advertising Agencies' Service Co., And PRESENTED Gratis, albeit with GOOD GRACE, to Ye MOST WORSHIPPFULL Company of Ye ART Directors." The map itself shows the several block radius around the intersection of Broadway and 30th Street, with a number of buildings (Hofbrau, Lipsitz Bros. Cloaks & Suits, Daly's Theatre, John L's Place, etc.) depicted rather three-dimensionally. A Chinaman puffs a pipe atop a chop suey restaurant, a horse-drawn carriage rolls down a street, two cats face off atop a building and other bits of activity take place throughout. Commercial artist Walter Whitehead was born in 1874, and died in 1956, which helps date this undated piece -- presumably to later in his life, perhaps his retirement. The Art Directors Club was founded in 1920 "for the progress of art in advertising and industry" (according to their 1921 exhibition catalogue) and both Otto Rebele and Whitehead were among its founding members. About Rebele little is known. He was born around 1878 and was both commercial artist and book illustrator. This scarce and delicate map is a rare survivor, obviously printed in a small quantity for distribution to the membership of this specialized trade association.
